Surgery (Space)

Surgery (Space) is a contemporary art space in Seoul dedicated to experimentation, dialogue, and artistic discovery, founded by Dr. Stephanie Kim.

The name “Surgery” stems from the belief that art has the power to examine, heal, and transform. Etymologically, surgery traces back through Old French surgerie to the Greek kheirourgia—literally "work done by hand" (kheir, "hand" + ergon, "work"). More than a medical procedure, surgery is a metaphor for the way art can cut through assumptions, reveal hidden truths, and reshape how we see ourselves and the world. We believe that Art is Surgery for the Soul.

Moving beyond the conventions of the white cube, Surgery (Space) provides a platform for artists to take risks, test new ideas, and engage audiences in meaningful ways. The space welcomes a wide range of practices—from painting, sculpture, and media art to performance, design, and interdisciplinary projects—bringing together emerging and established voices from Korea and around the world.

More than a gallery, Surgery (Space) is envisioned as a living cultural platform where exhibitions become catalysts for conversation, research, collaboration, and unexpected encounters.

Surgery (Space)는 서울 청담에 위치한 컨템포러리 아트 공간으로, 예술가를 위한, 예술가에 의한 실험적 플랫폼입니다.

‘Surgery’라는 이름은 상처를 치유하는 의학적 수술을 넘어, 예술이 인간의 감정과 기억, 그리고 사회를 들여다보고 변화시키는 과정이라는 믿음에서 출발했습니다. 어원적으로 'surgery'는 고대 프랑스어 surgerie를 거쳐 그리스어 kheirourgia에서 유래했으며, 문자 그대로 "손으로 하는 작업"을 의미합니다 (kheir, "손" + ergon, "작업"). 우리는 예술이 영혼을 위한 수술(Art is Surgery for the Soul)이라고 생각합니다.

화이트 큐브의 중립성을 벗어나, 동시대의 예술가들이 새로운 아이디어를 실험하고 관객과 깊이 있게 만날 수 있는 공간을 지향합니다. 회화, 조각, 미디어 아트, 퍼포먼스, 디자인 등 다양한 분야의 창작자들과 협업하며, 국내외 신진 및 중견 작가들을 소개합니다.

Surgery (Space)는 전시를 넘어 대화와 연구, 그리고 예상치 못한 만남이 이루어지는 살아있는 문화 플랫폼을 목표로 합니다.
